What Florida Medicaid pays for in assisted living

Florida Medicaid pays for assisted living care through the long-term care part of Statewide Medicaid Managed Care. It covers services such as personal care and help with medication. It doesn't pay room and board, so rent and meals still come from your parent's own income.

Who qualifies

A Florida ALF may take adults who need help with daily tasks such as bathing, dressing or medication, but who don't need 24-hour nursing care. Before a move in, a doctor or nurse completes a health assessment on AHCA form 1823.

To have Medicaid pay for the care, your parent must be 65 or older, or 18 or older with a disability, qualify for Medicaid and need a nursing facility level of care. AHCA sets out these rules.

How to apply and the waitlist

Call your local Aging and Disability Resource Center or the Elder Helpline at 1-800-96-ELDER to be screened. The Department of Elder Affairs decides whether the care need is high enough; the Department of Children and Families checks income and assets.

There's often a waitlist, so get screened early. Elder Affairs explains the steps.
