What kind of care?

Where the finder has every licensed facility

In Florida and California the finder searches every licensed assisted living home in the state record, with the Medicaid waiver flags each state publishes. In Florida it also shows the homes that report memory care. For nursing homes it covers every Medicare and Medicaid certified home in the US, from the CMS Provider Information file. Other states' assisted living rolls aren't in yet, so outside Florida and California pick a nursing home search or your state below.

How to check a facility yourself

Before you visit, look the home up in the state record. The listing on this site links to it. Check that the licence is current, how many beds it has and what the last inspections found.

Then call the home. Ask whether it has a room free, what the monthly rate and the care-level fees are, and whether it takes Medicaid for your parent's level of care. Get the answers in writing before your parent moves in.

For a nursing home, read the CMS star ratings next to the inspection results, fines and staffing. One low score is worth a question when you call, not a reason to stop looking.

Questions families ask

How do I find assisted living near me that accepts Medicaid?

Pick assisted living, type your city or ZIP and set who pays to Medicaid. In Florida that shows the ALFs on the state's Medicaid waiver list, nearest first. In California it shows the homes on the Assisted Living Waiver facility list. Call to ask whether a waiver place is open, since both states have a waitlist.

How do I check a nursing home's star rating?

Search for nursing homes near you and open the home's page. It shows the overall CMS star rating and the ratings for inspections, staffing and quality, as CMS publishes them on Care Compare.

What is the difference between assisted living and memory care?

Memory care is care for people living with dementia, in a secured setting with staff trained for it. It's often a wing or a care level inside an assisted living home. In Florida, the finder shows the ALFs that report memory care to AHCA as one of their special programs. It's what the home reports, not a separate licence, so ask how its memory care is staffed.
